There's a false narrative that it's somehow disrespectful to believe there's goodness in this land. There's evil. There is a lot of evil. A lot. It's a breathtaking amount of evil. It's heartbreaking to live in a country with so many evil people. But there are good people too. /1
Saying we believe in that good is not saying we don't believe in the evil. It is not saying we're blind to our evil history, the grip that history still has on our country, or the suffering that evil has caused. But saying there is no good disrespects heroes like John Lewis. /2
Seeing the good is right. In fact, it's necessary — every bit as necessary as seeing the evil. I'm grieving because so many Americans support the evil. But I see the good people too. Believing in their good is the fuel that empowers the fight against the evil. /3
Hatred of evil alone is not a fuel that can sustain the fight. Not for long it can't. It can't sustain the fight because winning isn't guaranteed. We cannot long fight an enemy when victory is not guaranteed if we believe only in the enemy's evil and live in reaction to it. /4
We must have love. We need to believe in love, in good. Why? Because we have got to have something worth fighting for. I believe in love. Love's worth fighting for. I believe in love and will keep fighting for it. So see evil, but see good too. And keep fighting for love.
