In fittingly emotional fashion the sun sets over @SirenTapYard on the eve of lockdown. It's been a privilege to share one last beer with our customers today, and we're grateful to everyone who braved the cold to visit us. But we're some of the lucky ones. [THREAD ABOUT PUBS]
Tomorrow we make small adjustments once more to become the safest collection point and bottle shop we can possibly be. Meanwhile many of our contemporaries, customers and friends in the pub trade close their doors, with many uncertain that they will ever re-open.
The word 'pub' has been bandied around a lot these past 6 months. Too often as a scapegoat, an easy target, a pawn, a snappy headline. But rarely done justice.
For many pubs this is their most critical time. It's not uncommon for pubs to lose money in parts of the year with a view to making it back in November/December. This shutdown alone is hugely debilitating, and of course it's another blow in an unabating year.
Some are still struggling with lack of support from landlords, many fell outside of grant help for varying reasons. Not to mention all the time and money spent over the summer converting gardens, investing in safety, changing business models, transitioning to table service...
Even this week, our whole industry has had to rally tirelessly just to allow the very basic level of fair play, the bare minimum of continuing to keep selling the product we specialise in, in the safest way, to the customers who value it the most.
Pubs are about people, communities, safe places. They're the difference in a day out, the difference in a new area you move to or don't know, the moments you never saw coming and a constant in a world full of change.
Well from us, the brewery, thank you for giving us a platform and allowing us to do what we do. From us, the Siren team, thanks for punctuating our our lives and livelihoods. From all of us, the punters, thanks for giving us something to look forward to on the other side.
If you can, support your local pubs, independents and restaurants this month and beyond. It could make all the difference. Stay positive and stay safe. AN/DA. [END]
