My experiences are similar to @J_Dot_J and honestly it's really messed with my world view over the last 12 years.

I was raised conservative in a conservative part of the country. The values I was raised with included work hard, stay humble, stay in your lane, the world 1/ https://twitter.com/cornelldolanpc/status/1324011257398177803
doesn't revolve around you, and respect is earned not given. Those are the big ones anyway. So I jaunted out into the world from that small town and, eventually, worked to put those values into practice.

I saw liberals as people who constantly whined about unfairness, 2/
they wanted a free pass through life, they despised work, they blamed everyone else for their problems, and if they'd just stop bitching they'd all be fine. And my college professors were totally "out of touch" with the real world.

I always got a chuckle out 3/
of the fact my egghead professors couldn't change their own oil if their lives depended on it.

In 2008 something started rearing its head. And it was ugly. I was told a guy running for president hated our "values" and wanted to destroy them. I worked for McCain 4/
but I never saw why Obama was such a boogeyman. I didn't agree with his politics, but he wasn't too far left of Clinton, and Clinton was kind of a lovable rogue in my neck of the woods.

There was something these people were seeing that I just wasn't seeing. 5/
Eventually, the paranoia and fear surrounding Obama combined with McCain tapping Palin led me to stop supporting McCain. Obama won and my people freaked. out. I mean full on, full bore, he's going to destroy everything America stands for freaked out.

Something 6/
really interesting started happening right after. All of a sudden my people became the whiners, the victims, etc. Every bad thing that happened? It was Obama and Washington. Every layoff in a no longer competitive industry? Obama. Every foreclosure? Obama. What 7/
was 100% missing from those grievances was the personal responsibility I was taught was so important. One of my relatives got hit with a massive tax bill, for example. But it was because he'd been ducking taxes since the first Clinton administration. He took no 8/
responsibility for that whatsoever. When the IRS picked up his RV, his credit tanked, and he found himself unable to even rent an apartment it was 100% liberals who did it.

The same is true of dozens of people I grew up with. Fucked around all through HS, dropped out 9/
of college, and struggling to get by with three kids? Liberals did it. Business failed? Liberals. Everything has become their fault.

But there's more. The same folks who always preached humility are now running around on facebook arguing that Dr. Fauci is a shill 10/
because their 30 second google search is as good as his lifetime of study. So much for humility.

Black lives matter? What about me? Why isn't everyone talking about how hard my life is? So much for the world doesn't revolve around you.

I've come to realize that while 11/
the values I'm talking about are good, most of the people who preached them never lived them to begin with.

They were a bad joke that let them punch down at others. Because the second they felt powerless, they abandoned them completely.

Trump is their revenge. 12/
They see how he makes liberals feel and they just enjoy that because that's how they felt - for absolutely no discernible logical reason - under Obama. That's where this comes from. /end
