I’m committed to keeping structures in place that allow communities in our city to speak directly to the school board. Recent changes to how people can speak to the Board threaten our commitment to be open and transparent. I’m worried about this.

The #VSB Long Range Facilities Plan (LRFP) maps out how we use schools and school lands. We need transparent and open opportunities for communities to partipate in order to advocate and make informed decisions.

The LRFP is currently in phase 2 of consultations https://www.eventbrite.ca/o/vancouver-school-board-31259864969 - so far trends point to many positive pieces such as no sale of public land and a focus on using public schools for kids, including space for childcare!

My motion from 2019 asked for comparisons with the City of Van’s long term planning documents, consulting with Squamish nation, and more BEFORE drafting LRFP. My motion was not considered by the board.

I look forward to a public, open process when discussing the LRFP and I am committed to receiving your feedback.
We need transparent and participatory governance models and a commitment to advocacy now more than ever.
