Few states have realised the importance of allocating more funds for epidemic preparedness. However, it is not enough to allocate funds, disbursement is equally important.

For instance, allocation to Epidemic preparedness in Kano, Nigeria’s most populous northern state has improved over the years.

However, the state can still do more to prioritize timely disbursement of allocated funds.

The exponential increase in recorded disease cases in Kano state from 31 cases in 2016 to 2,386 in 2019 could mean 2 things.

An improvement in disease surveillance & reporting capacity in the State or an increase in disease outbreaks.

Disease outbreaks cost state govts money - through lost taxes during lockdowns or sick citizens who are unable to work and generate income which can be taxed.

2.73m Nigerians had jobs but could not work due to COVID19 lockdowns in 2020. Do the maths.
