So: I was wrong that it would be a blowout—though it looks from exit polls like my dream about minorities going Trump in unprecedented numbers came to pass. Still think Biden’s got this one locked down. Hopefully the election is called soon, and Trump’s rants are ignored. 1/
Other silver lining: Looks like we’re headed for divided government. Under Trump’s stewardship, his party will get a rebuke. But Dems have not been handed anything like a mandate. The country is not in the mood for a transformation. 2/
The biggest losers: NeverTrumpers. For those hoping to “rebuild” conservatism, Trump did sufficiently well that his repudiation of neo-Reaganite and neoconservative politics will not, in turn, be repudiated by Republicans. He will be emulated and consulted, not shunned. 3/
Runner-up losers: the woke. We’ll see how the exit polls on minorities end up holding up. But if there’s truth to them, radical “anti-racists” will have to account for that. Also, divided government will mean they will probably be shunted aside by Biden even more forcefully. 3/
Honorable mention loser: the emerging Democratic majority thesis. Realignment will be messy and unpredictable. It probably won’t look anything like what the conventional wisdom has laid out for us. 4/
Finally: That was an ugly speech. Beyond all of Trump’s catastrophic failures of leadership, he will now be remembered for a deranged and dangerous loser’s rant as he is shown the door by American voters. Not a good look. But Trump is not a good look kinda guy. Sad. /Fin.
PS Unforgettable moment: Mike Pence looking like a hostage when called up to follow up on Trump’s rant, meekly refusing to endorse the stab-in-the-back language.
