America is stuck between two competing visions, cemented in place(s). Blue and red, the country is slowly drifting apart and there is no mechanism to force it to come together.

America is stuck between two competing visions, cemented in place(s). Blue and red, the country is slowly drifting apart and there is no mechanism to force it to come together.

This morning it feels like this will fuel moves to institutionalize divisions, not resolve them. The country's massive scale means you can choose your America. I suspect we will see continued residential sorting. Businesses will follow. Demographic changes will continue.

The balkanization of American has been underway for some time. This won't help.

The U.S. is an incredibly diverse and big country, both geographically and in terms of population. The mechanisms that have worked to unify the country in the past - institutions and norms - have been weakened for some time now.
