Lobo the main man was coming back he was going to show the DC universe what for, a chance to really parody all the stuff that happened in the years since the New 52 started, with this cover it looks like someone knew what Lobo people wanted to see.

Then when you opened up the comic, you got this loser. How did we get here? Well, let me weave a tale of denial, bad optics, reboots, and how the hell New 52 Lobo became one of the most HATED concepts in comics.

Lobo has been a comic character since the early 80's but didn't take off right away, he was introduce in Omega Men as a bounty hunter parody of Wolverine, but he was reinvented by his same creator in Justice League International into the basics of what we know now.

This is not a complete history of Lobo, and there is a lot to say about the character, but Lobo became a mainstay of the DC Universe staring in a bunch of mini's, ongoins, even showing up on many DC tv shows, and this was kind of what he was in each one.

But some people have issue with certain aspects, Lobo is often a parody character, 90's heroes in particular are part of that so some editors hate him for taking the piss and also hate him for BEING emblematic of that era. But people are fine with this.

I understand "reinventing characters" but even newer fans tend to like Lobo if only because he is a parody of 90's and they here bad things about it all the time, hell when I made a post on facebook I GOT NORMIES who don't read comics reacting BADLY to New Lobo.

Now Lobo in the new 52 did show up before this, in Deathstroke, and in Stormwatch given a new origin in both, leading to multiple Lobo's because DC didn't know what to do with him. So New Lobo was given a shot.

For the purposes of this thread, Were going to call him Nubo, the guy is such a different character, and even a very mainstream webcomic reacted badly to him, Nubo was hated the moment he showed up but do the comics make up for him? Good god no.

Nubo didn't endear himself to the audience, a lot of people find his first appearance VERY DEFENSIVE, like yeah I'm Lobo, and this is me TAKE IT OR LEAVE LOSER SORRY NOT SORRY THAT IS MY CATCHPHRASE NOW. Yeah.

Nubo did shockingly have defenders before his first appearance and a little after, hoping that instead of a 90's parody he was a New 52 parody. The problem is the comic doesn't treat the New 52 with parody it treats it's Lobo as "the serious Lobo of this generation"

Now the comic was WIDLY panned and I mean widely panned. The writer of the one shot Marguerite Bennett was brought in into write it and many people wonder what the idea here was. It's kind of weird but let's go down this rabbit hole of cringe.

One thing she said and some fans thought was this was trying to make Lobo more like Classic Lobo...who didn't show up much at all, it's not like there is a bring BACK old Lobo movement the character was obscure before his new look.

To be fair, the comic and one of the reasons it's hated is that it said OLD LOBO the one people like is a fake, really good way to get fans on your side, tell people the old classic a fake one. Man your so cool Nubo.

One theory about the Nubo, he was created to make him easier to adapt to live action, many of Lobo's classic comics have him with one of the most over the top physiques in comics and this would make him much easier to get a real actor.

But DC wanted to prove people wrong, and now let's get to the ongoing, it's a weird one, see Cullen Bunn was very upfront about one thing, this was not HIS ORIGINAL idea for his run. The pitch he made was a buddy cop book with BOTH Lobo's keeping ambiguous who the real one was.

But editorial really wanted this new Lobo to be loved, did they create a cult classic comics that gave Nubo his own fanbase I mean Dc has made PLENTY of great books over the years by reinventing the wheel, SURLY NUBO WILL BE PART OF THAT LEGACY!

Oh no, the comic lasted a year and a month, People gave up on Nubo, but I'm going to point this out THIS WAS how he was looking by the end of the end of the run, this is from issue 13, man it's look like they are trying to fix something now.

So yeah before his comic was cancelled they were trying to move his forward to be regular Lobo, a little too late for many people. Besides calling him the "real Lobo" then moving him to be like the old one is rather lame DC, I thought you had balls...honestly I would do it too.

They did kind of every mistake you could make
*tried to make him sympathetic
*tried to make him cool
*tried to make him badass
*make him appeal to women who love pretty boys
Look Nubo tried and failed, like at this shit if you told me this was Lobo I would gag.

I mean look at this Squall ass mother fucker and HIS DOOMED LOVE, some people do view him as an interesting character just not Lobo, but even I have limits, guy is not unique.

I mean hell look at him try to not troll Superman, a classic staple of the character, everything is so serious with him that it's make most readers not like him that much, if you want serious anti heroes DC was OVERLOADED with them at the time.

After his series ended, even with the changes fans did not warm up to him. So what happened with Nubo? Did he find redemption?

He was put into Green Lantern and shrunk down and Left on the shelf with Hal Basically going we should never deal with him again after DC rebirth hit. DC rebirth was basically a year long apology and man they wasted no time with this one.

Man it's too bad he was used in Injustice thoug...no he wasn't Injustice and other media USED Classic Lobo even with New Coke Lobo around and I don't think he's been adapted at all. In anything. He doesn't even HAVE AN ACTION FIGURE. He doesn't even have a Funko pop.

So yeah Nubo is one of those runs that people could tell didn't work, they tried, but DC gave up on Lobo New version 1 and 2 already, this was the one they decided SHOULD BE LOBO, they did try the most with him compared to the other two.

Could New Lobo be fixed? The question is, would you want that? Honestly sometimes it's better to mulligan and cut your losses, a classic Lobo is around in DC right now for DC to use for later writers, they have not called him the real Lobo but one day I'm sure they will.

Look not every character should be the same, people like Lobo as this BIG MUSCLEBOUND DICK who just does whatever and get on people nerves, he's often the butt of the joke anyway, and his various comics have some amazing Simon Bisley art, sometimes classics stay around.

So sorry....not sorry Nubo, your just going to have be the butt of the joke when everyone talks about bad reboots, hey it's not all bad, at least people remember you compared to others...but I do want to forget about you.
