Thread. Here is the picture of the Indian Botanical Society meeting 1946 meeting held at Allahabad. There are many stalwarts in this picture. I want to bring some of my observations from this picture. Of course, related to #diatoms #algae #WomeninScience (picture from ARI)
Prof. MOP Iyengar, the father of Indian Phycology, Prof. SP Agharkar, founder of @ari_pune, Prof. Birbal Sahni, founder of @BSIPLucknow, Prof TV Desikachary, the global authority of #cyanobacteria and Mrs Ella Gonzalves. The only woman scientist in the group
Mrs Ella Gonzalves, associated with Institute of Science, Bombay and #StXavierCollege, Bombay. She is one of the pioneering algologists from India. She did amazing work on the #hotspring algae of the #Himalayas. She also trained many algologists. HPGandhi is one of them
I assume that Gonzalves collections are in Blatter's Herbarium http://blatterherbarium.org/  of StXavrierCollege http://xaviers.edu/  Again I insist that our appreciation for the #Herbarium #Collections and #Museums is very less and that too for smaller organisms is totally absent!
Coming back to #WomeninScience, It would have been a great challenge to be the only woman in entire gathering and of course only woman algologist in the Indian subcontinent then. We must remember these lesser known scientist and of course lesser known organisms #algae
