if there's anything we've learned from the jd mess (and from other discourse accounts tbh), it's to be wary of people who make being pro-ship a core part of their identity
for the record: i do consider myself pro-ship because it's the best way to communicate "we all have the right to create whatever freaky shit we want as long as we're mindful about it"
that doesn't mean i expect a three page essay on consent before you write omegaverse porn, but it does mean don't be a dick, and don't use fiction to deliberately harm people
but if someone makes being pro-ship an essential part of their identity, then best case scenario is that they're at risk for developing severe tunnel vision. worst case scenario is that they use the label as a cover for some ugly, harmful, or downright bigoted attitudes
and the unfortunate fact is that freedom of speech/expression has been a dogwhistle for racists, homophobes, misogynists, etc for literal decades at this point (since at least the 90s, when everyone was in a panic over "pc culture")
now, that doesn't mean that everyone who's passionate about freedom of expression is a bigot. what it *does* mean, however, is that any community that makes it a core part of their ethos will attract bigots who think they've found a welcoming environment, and sooner or later-
you will have to contend with it
which means learning how to recognize how racism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism, etc manifests in ways that aren't captain planet villain levels of cartoonish, over the top evil
