My article in @nature is finally out, titled ‘Redesign Open Science for Asia, Africa and Latin America’. I wrote this piece not as just as my opinion, but to echo those who desire change https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-03052-3 . (1/8)
I argue that investing in developing research systems is one of the best ways to solve global challenges. Local scientists are best equipped to tackle local problems. But getting there requires a few steps:
(2/8)
1. Given that in many of these regions, resources and decision making are centralized, we need to call for government policies that prioritize credibility over quantity. LMICs cannot waste precious resources on unusable science. (3/8)
2. Many universities are equipped for education, not producing research. Thus universities need to rework their system (e.g. teaching hours, support staff) so that academics have the time and tools to conduct research. (4/8)
3. Scientists need to understand reproducibility, #openscience and its antecedents as they start learning research, to critically evaluate their own and other’s work. Also to join global conversations for applications of OS in their unique contexts (5/8)
4. Science stakeholders in North America, Europe and Australia need to make space and understand that despite the perceived scale, we are the global minority. To better the world we need to include.. well.. the world. (6/8)
5. Finally, do not let metrics become so ingrained that they no longer serve the purpose of producing credible sciences. Evaluate and challenge as necessary. (7/8)
Thank you to each and every person who helped make this happen, and every signatory for believing in the cause. Thanks to @SBMost @BrianNosek @dasaptaerwin @ameliazein @keincaled @ceptional @siminevazire @rmwillen and many more who played key roles in my own OS journey. (8/8)
