The Electoral College as it currently exists gives more representation to small states, which is fine, but it also effectively eliminates representation for all minority voters in the 48 winner-takes-all states. I propose proportionate representation in electoral votes. 1/4
Roughly proportionate electoral votes would mean that 4/9 SC & 4/11 TN votes would go to Democrats, and 18/55 CA votes and 10/29 NY votes would go to Republicans. This still gives greater representation to small states, but one that is actually representative of its voters. 2/4
Not only would it increase the impact of the average American voter, but it would also eliminate this rhetoric about Red States and Blue States, which is the kind of subtle and not-so-subtle divisiveness that is destroying our democracy. 3/4
Because the truth is that we are not a nation of extremes. We are a bell curve that may be getting a bit more stretched out, but most of America is still somewhere in the middle and we are more purple than we realize. 4/4
