Progressing under Ole Gunnar Solskjær?

I think not

[A Thread]
Firstly, what is the benchmark for progress, a subjective term?

Well at the least it entails doing better than your predecessor, or predecessors, and has he achieved that?

In the 8 years since Ferguson’s retirement, United have had four managers

Ole

Jose

LVG

Moyes
First of all, let’s take a look at Ole’s 1+3/4 seasons in charge

He took over in the second half of 18/19, where he picked up from Jose, and led them to 66 points and 6th place

In his first full season, 19/20, he once again landed on 66 points, and once again trophyless
This may be seen as a sign of progress, albeit to his own standards but it isn’t even so

You see, at a glance of the league position, you are tricked into believing that third is better than sixth, in most cases that is correct. But this is an odd one
Hitting a higher league position with the same points is a sign of regression

For 66 points to equate to 6th, but then 3rd the following year shows the quality has dipped, and finishing on that same number of points shows that you didn’t capitalise on the worse quality
which shows a lack of quality in its self especially when put into context of spending 130 million on the defence alone
Now that we’ve discussed that Ole hasn’t even beaten himself we will compare to other managers, firstly

David Moyes,
famously only got the job on the recommendation of Fergie and that alone

Moyes’ only season in charge he hit 64 points, won the community shield and was sacked
64 points, much like 66, is not at all United standard

But there isn’t a significant difference in it at all, one draw turning to a win

The sacking came because of the lack of sheer drop off in Fergies last season

Moyes isn’t good enough, but was he worse than Ole?
Louis Vannn Ghaaaaals Army

In charge of United for two seasons, finishing 4th on 70 points and 5th on 66, something I’ll get onto now

He also won an Fa Cup during his time. Something Ole is yet to get near
This season here interests me the most

5th on 66 points and an Fa Cup

This is clearly a much better season than 19/20 under Ole

66 points and third, we have discussed, is worse than 5th in terms of squad improvement

The Fa Cup too intrigues me,
as it is something Ole hasn’t won in his time here

It is also weird to think he was sacked the day after winning the Cup

Ole has only reached the semi final of said cup and yet that is seen as progress, something that doesn’t sit right with me, knowing we did better 4 years ago
Josayyyy Mourinhiooo

At United, he finished
6th on 69 points, with the Community Shield, Carabao Cup and The Europa League

2nd on 81 points and got to the Fa Cup final

No doubt better than Ole
Defensive Records [League]

Solskjær(19/20, first full season)

In 38 games Ole’s Man United conceded 33 goals. Quite decent

Funnily enough he had the exact same clean sheets as Moyes with 13
Defensive Records

Moyes(13/14, only season)

United played the usual 38 games, and conceded 43 goals

Leaving a gpg ratio of 1.13

Clean sheets

13
The same amount of clean sheets is worrying, considering the amount that was spent on the defence this season
LVG

They played the full 38 games with 35 goals conceded and held on for 18 clean sheets throughout the prem
Jose(17/18, best season)

19 clean sheets, not all can be put down to Jose but De Gea and his best season, none the less an unbelievable amount

To top that off they also only conceded 28, one less than the season before, that you can attribute to Jose
Summary of the Defence

Ole has regressed with the number of clean sheets, mainly due to playing Maguire in a high line and also a low dip in form for De Gea

However, he lowered the goals conceded compared to Moyes and LVG, but Jose had the lowest

For 150mil, not good enough
Worst Result

Jose Mourinho

Worst- 4-0 to Chelsea in Stamford Bridge, it was a return to his former club, but not exactly a welcome one nor a kind one
LVG

This one is the worst of the lot
4-0 loss to MKDons

They did have a young Dele Alli, but that is no excuse

Arguably the most disappointing result post SAF
Moyes, 4-1 to City

No derby is a particularly nice one to take when you lose, but a 4-1 loss especially so
Ole

I’m sure this is still fresh in everyone’s mind but still has to be included

6-1 at home to Tottenham., not only is it a tough result, it’s a shock to the system for Ole especially

He lost to the man who Ole replaced
The worst one here easily is the MkDons loss

I remember the amount of embarrassment that came with that result and how it felt being a fan of that club

I suppose everyone has a different ranking, but for me this is the first time Solskjær doesn’t finish last in a ranking
Comparing to Solskjær’s seasons, none stack up to any of the previous managers, bar the Moyes season

This may seem obvious to any rival fans, but the Ole in crew need to learn that we are not in a cycle rather going back wards
The only thing for certain, in my opinion, that Ole had progressed is the squad and first team quality

I believe that we shouldn’t be wasting this squad on someone who’s hardly better than Moyes
