a large reason has to why folks don't understand the lack of motivation towards voting is because they dont know how the electoral college works, & instead of being those people that mock you for not knowing info that wasn't taught on PURPOSE. here's a thread explaining it.
so BOOM. the electoral college, it's established in article 2 section 1 of the constitution. pretty much saying the electoral college are the group of mfs electing president/vice president. its based on how many folks are represented in congress. so the amount of representatives+
senators for each state. Every state gets 2 senators, whereas representatives are dependent on the state's population. so for example while texas has 36 reps, a smaller state like oregon only has 5. there are 538 electors in total. (435 reps, 100 sentors, 3 electors in D.O.C)
presidential candidates are trying to collect electoral votes from each state to surpass 270 votes in total, or more in order to win the presidency. so back to the earlier example a candidate wins texas, they get 38 electoral votes (reps+senators added together)
which is why you always see candidates fighting after the bigger states such as california, texas, florida, & new york. just those 4 states alone they would have 151 electoral votes. so if a candidate wins 15+ states but they have a small electoral vote add up, it doesn't matter.
so last election. hillary won the popular vote, it was 48.5% to 46.4%. BUT she lost the electoral vote by 74 votes. trump got 306, while she only got 232. people have a justified distrust towards voting because the popular vote doesn't really decide, it's the electoral college.
please understand that voting isn't this radical act most of yall believe it is, it's not creating the direct action and change that's needed. support and follow grassroot organizations, support organizers who are in the streets DAILY. @GKMC18 @heyo__tayo @JalenKobayashi
@mzmimi1021 @Asha_2A @606hoodlum @supernaira @kalebautman @DaudxMumin @arielxhobbs_ @thesiiiiims4 @nitsia7 @ladieversatile just to name a few, and there are soooo many more just showing some love to my people.💕💕
we don't reach liberation by participating and banking on the same system that its entire reason for creation was to oppress us & keep us marginalized. that's not how we win yall.
