Election Day Thoughts from Recovering Politicos:
1) We keep counting ballots after Election Day every time. This is perfectly normal. https://www.factcheck.org/2020/10/nothing-untoward-about-counting-ballots-after-election-day/

2) Do not panic or ballot counting machines break down.
Mailed ballots have been folded up for weeks. The creases jam machines designed to take flat, unfolded ballots. Not a big deal. Everyone knows how to repair their machines. It just takes time.

3) We have never known the true winner on Election Night. The media makes projections. Actual results aren’t certified for weeks. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2020/11/01/us/politics/trump-ballot-counting-election.amp.html%3f0p19G=0232
4) Lawsuits will be filed. I have never worked an election year where someone didn’t file a lawsuit somewhere. This is a frustrating, but normal part of the process.
5) Be wary of “mirages,” early vote totals that seem to favor one party or another. I worked a race where early balloting suggested we’d lose in a landslide, we won by 2.5%. https://www.google.com/amp/s/mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUSKBN27H1A6
6) I distract myself from the pundits by watching totals from Bellwether counties. It’s an inside baseball thing, but it narrows your view to keep you from hitting refresh on @FiveThirtyEight every 2-seconds. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/politics/battleground-state-polls.html
7) Don’t start watching the coverage too early. I don’t even turn over to Election coverage until 9pm ET.
Watch a movie. Play a board game. No one knows anything at 5pm, so you’re just stressing out for no reason.

8) Need stress relief? I recommend two things: Quiet and a new game.
I try to get 5-minute quiet breaks throughout the day. (I've been known to hide in janitorial closets.) And I usually download a new game, like Best Fiends, to focus on when I need distraction.
