Here's what's happening in the Allegheny County elections warehouse today. A THREAD!
1. Early this morning, election workers started to review declaration envelopes (the one voters sign). Those ballots are then sent to a high speed opener (it can open approx 40k/hour.) 1/
2. The declaration envelopes are set aside and saved (required by state law). Ballots are then sent to another letter opener that removes the secrecy envelope. 2/
3. Ballots are then brought to tables of election workers who must flatten the ballots by hand. (This is the most time-consuming part of the pre-canvassing process.) 3/
4. Trays of flattened ballots are taken to scanners and are scanned. The scanners are not connected to the internet. Encrypted memory sticks (yes there are several backups if these fail) are set aside and results will begin to be uploaded at 8pm when polls close. /4
