In the next 24-48 hours (or longer) anyone turning to journalism and information will well face a choice between fog and chaos vs. clarity and order.

Here are 6 things I'll be telling my media students @humbercollege in Toronto today and tomorrow (see thread)
@HumberMediaArts
The result of the #USElections2020 may well test journalism as a discipline in troubling ways.

Watch out for:

1/Who is doing the reporting? Is is a legitimate, long standing media outlet or just a random voice on social media?
@GuillermoAcosta @GreenwaySJ @HumberMediaArts
2/Does the person/group making the statement have a stake in the claim? Or are they neutral, just trying to sort out what's being said?

3/Does it (only) confirm your beliefs and play on your emotions? Where's the info coming from?

#HumberPR @andreatavchar @adriearsenault
4/Are you about to retweet, re-post something in a hurry without knowing for sure that it's true, that it happened at all?

5/Can you take whatever is being reported and verify it another way?

@ProfLaraKing @wisem @terraciolfe
And finally...

6/Is the reporting you are seeing fair and balanced, showing respect to both sides? Is there a 'floor of decency' in all the reporting?

A hectic news cycle is now underway. It may take time (or not) to know the result. Let professional Journalism do its job.
