It's been a few hours, so, let's keep moving for today's #DamOrNot warm-up!
Here are pics of the infrastructure I asked you about in the poll: dam, weir, and culvert! All of these can occur along rivers, streams, and even lakes! I’ll break it down a bit more now.

Back to our 1st topic, like you use Google Maps to find traffic jams, we @FireLabTweets + collaborators use Google Earth and Maps to find dams, weirs, and culverts! We do this for many reasons. One reason is that we don't know where these occur: https://bit.ly/3kVvmG8 #ngsschat
You might be saying WHAT?
How do we not know where all these infrastructures occur or their age? Surely someone has been keeping track! In short, NOPE! Not really! Dams, roads, etc have expanded over time and we have not done a great job of documenting where or when! #ngsschat

The #GreatLakes basin is one of the world’s largest freshwater systems, and we only started a systematic inventory of things like dams, weirs & culverts ~10 yrs ago and still don't really know when most were built. Here’s more about why this matters: https://www.greatlakesnow.org/2020/10/dams-great-lakes-aging-infrastructure/
In many regions like the #GreatLakes, dams, weirs, and culverts have increased over time and documentation remained opportunistic and random, like in this *made-up* scenario gif that I created.

The GIF is w/ data I mapped for the #GreatLakes in 2012. The image w/ most dots is the full dataset of ~170,000 different structures. I used random subsets of the data to visualize what it *could* have looked like over time. Orig paper: https://bit.ly/2Go3ADi #DamorNot #NGSSChat
I'll take a breath now and let you all ask questions before we move on to additional considerations about dams, weirs, and culverts in the next hour. So hit me up with your Qs now or later. #ngsschat
