Voters still considering a Trump vote: your vote impacts the democracy of this country like never before. Not just policy - our actual democracy. Voter suppression & election integrity are at risk, but I know you want to talk policy, so let’s do it! (THREAD/1)
Economy: it’s propaganda that the Trump economy is golden (true even before Covid). Trump created fewer jobs even in the first two years of his than Obama did, and Obama was elected during the worst recession in American history. https://www.forbes.com/sites/chuckjones/2020/02/07/obamas-last-three-years-of-job-growth-all-beat-trumps-best-year/?sh=3b64ad676ba6
Overseas jobs: Trump didn’t save U.S. jobs like he promised. In fact, since he took office, about 200,000 MORE jobs have moved overseas. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/jul/10/trump-workers-jobs-overseas-factories
Stock market: personally, I don’t think the market is a good predictor of economic health for most Americans, but if you disagree, I have to say that Obama did better. There are a lot of charts & graphs to support this statement. Here’s one for the S&P. Others are easy to find.
More stock market: there are a lot of reasons to believe Biden will be good for the market, not the least of which is his steady hand. Investors don’t like the volatility of an erratic president w/ever-changing messaging, for one. Here are some others. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/10/23/blackstones-byron-wien-biden-presidency-can-be-good-for-stock-market.html
Economy/Covid: the economy is inexorably intertwined with Covid response now. It’s not about lockdowns, it’s about the public feeling safe enough to frequent businesses even when they’re open. Need evidence: look at businesses that are open but still failing.
Economy/Covid: those businesses are failing in spite of being open because people aren’t frequenting them. They can - they just don’t feel safe doing so, because rising numbers & no plan for dealing with the virus on a national level exists. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/oct/26/first-thing-election-special-were-not-going-to-control-covid-says-trump-aide
Economy/Covid: in fact, Trump’s chief of staff outright says they have no plan to address it in the article referenced above: “Trump’s chief of staff says the administration has no plans to limit virus’s spread.”
Economy/Covid: the way to help the economy recover from Covid is to get people back to work/save small businesses. The way to do that is to make sure people feel safe frequenting those businesses. The way to do that is a national testing and tracing policy.
