When Wikipedia editors decided to put the Daily Mail into the list of unreliable sources (all tabloids were already considered unreliable, the debate was just about whether the Mail was a tabloid), someone from the Mail called the office to shout at us.

The right wing has hated Wikipedia for years. There are multiple right wing versions of Wikipedia which are all largely filled with Holocaust denial and Nazi fetishism. Some on the left also hate Wikipedia, because it doesn't say what they want it to say either.

Believe it or not, it's pretty hard to write a global encyclopaedia which exists in over 300 languages and is run by a charity with less than 500 staff, and that manages to satisfy people like Toby Young & P*ter H*tchens, who also wrote about why he hated Wikipedia a while back.

Everybody's got their personal axe to grind, and some topic on which they think they know best. You're not special. You're one of millions of people who edit Wikipedia.

If you want to affect the site, go learn its rules and contribute to it, don't write the same pissy article for the 100th time for the Spectator, you absolute child.

Well surprise fucking surprise, Toby Young's Wikipedia page prominently displays a template warning that he or someone close to him has been trying to edit it. Case closed.

Wikipedia does have a very mild liberal bias, by the way. Why is that? Because the people who care most about free knowledge, who have education and time on their hands to contribute to that for free, tend to be left leaning.

The right will never care about free knowledge and providing free educational resources for everybody because they won't benefit from that. They benefit from keeping people poor and uneducated. So again, go whine to your hedge fund pals about it, you creepy egghead.

Wikipedia also has lots of other biases that are more problematic than its mild left bias. 80% of its editors are men, most of its editors come from richer countries, speak European languages, and are white. Toby Young does not care about those biases.

Other thing to note is that the Wikimedia Foundation prominently advertises these biases exist, therefore not even claiming to be truly neutral. The attacks on Wikipedia are based on an ideal of journalistic neutrality that has never existed, and that these hacks don't follow.

Nobody is neutral. The aim of Wikipedia is to get as many people to contribute within a defined set of rules as possible, to reduce bias. But it will never be truly neutral, because that's impossible. Admit your biases, like Wikipedia does, and let ppl make up their own minds.
