The #EU & #India want to deepen their relations. Is there potential in cooperation on Data for #AI?

To get to meaningful collaboration, one needs to understand where both blocks stand. The EU has issued its GDPR, India is working on its data protection regulation. Its implementation will be decisive for how future collaboration can look like.
The current data protection situation in India is very complicated:
While both India and the EU emphasise ethics of AI in their AI strategies, interestingly India mentions privacy far more frequently while the EU puts a focus on standards.
AI is a fast growing and very dynamic field that extends to many lines of business. Our study finds three clusters of firms that deal with AI in India: Core-AI, Sectoral AI and AI-as-a-service firms:
Sectoral deep dives reveal that there is tremendous potential in healthcare but much less e.g. in the retail sector. One should look at collaboration potential sector by sector.
Recommendations
- Make Indian regulation attain adequacy status with GDPR
- Promote consensus on strategic goals for AI leadership
- Increase availability of data for AI
- Increase expert-level collaborations through lighthouse projects & joint federated learning infrastructure
