Joint Personnel Recovery instructors from our Military Trg and #SERE Sch recently assisted the Military College with an Ex in the Slieve Blooms to practice drills for Combat Recovery forces extracting Isolated Personnel. A Personnel Recovery Coordination Centre was also manned /1
Why do the Air Corps lead this type of training? The Air Component in practically every military in the world has the responsibility to train military personnel from all branches in Personnel Recovery and the related disciplines of survival, evasion, resistance and extraction (2)
This aviation-centric capability evolved during WW2 when aircrew were given basic training in how to extract themselves from hostile territory and escape to friendly lines when shot down during an air mission, including land and sea survival (3)
During the Vietnam War, the US Air Force developed advanced escape and evasion training for its pilots, and established dedicated Combat Search & Rescue (CSAR) units to recover downed aircrew from hostile territory (4)
Today in the era of Joint operations, the Air Component still leads the development and training of this capability but the execution of it involves land, sea, air and SOF. Regular military units are also now trained in Combat Recovery, rather than relying exclusively on CSAR (5)
The Air Corps has been conducting personnel recovery operations from non-permissive environments for decades, which continues to this day with EAS. Building on this experience, in 2007 the SERE School was established with the responsibility to train DF personnel in SERE & JPR (6)
JPR trg is the side of risk management & resilience in how to respond when it all goes wrong: when positive control of our personnel is lost in hostile environments and they become isolated. With DF troops deployed abroad in many high-risk areas, JPR capability is critical.
