Thread: My new book took a long time to get from idea to printed page. We tend to avoid talking about rejection, but I don't think this helps younger scholars. And unfortunately rejection is all part of the process. My book is better because of it. 1/4
So here are some of the places that rejected my book: Chicago ('maybe if it was about another city'), UVA (contracted, then reviewers didn't like it), Penn State (ignored proposal), CUP ('try an Irish publisher'), OUP ('limited audience like your first book' ouch). 2/4
Was I hurt? Yes, I was hurt. I even thought about turning it into articles or abandoning the idea completely. But I am glad that I didn't and I am proud of what I produced. The published book hardly resembles the first draft I wrote for UVA. 3/4
Big thanks to all who helped me to persevere. There are many but these bore the brunt: @CaroleHolohan @RedmondJennifer @ciaranon @CWallaceDublin @lisamgriffith @bourgeoismelt @Scorhill @catherineeats @RMcMnow Sean Connolly Aoibheann Sweeney James Kelly David Dickson
