An impromptu episode of "your language really REALLY fucking matters"

CW shitty societal and mental ill-health realities 1/
This is not OK.

(I've scrubbed the deets out on purpose. Don't go hunting.) 2/
I know you know. I'm cross about it today. 3/
Mental health is awareness-ed to death.

But EVIDENTLY, mental ILL-health is still so stigmatised that some people think nothing of throwing it around as an insult.

Using it the way once upon a time they would have used "gay", or "sp*stic", or "has AIDS" (I'm sorry) 4/
It's a lazy, thoughtles, *easy* explanation when someone's views are so starkly different from yours.

To chalk that difference up to illness (ringing some horrible bells here) and to other the fuck out of illness in the process. 5/
I can't even begin to articulate the damage, really.

How are you supposed to find the energy to open up, talk to someone, petition a broken system or overwhelmed charities for the healthcare you need, when a consistent narrative uses you as shorthand for less, wrong, bad? 6/
All this to say: please call people IN when you see this happening.

Even– no, ESPECIALLY when it's people you respect and admire, whose values you think (or thought) aligned with yours.

We all deserve better, and your Twitter account is all you need to do the work.
