This is interesting bec one of my students in MFA class submitted a paper about house designs in ph. His research was very interesting! He found out a lot of things aside from the fact that subdivisions impose a certain aesthetic (kunwari italian or french sa cam**** homes) 1/x https://twitter.com/tumorbiologist/status/1323541101488136194
Kwento ko lang his findings: One is that our designs arent really french/italian but we also put a little bit of filipinizing on our houses. You cant say it’s very french in architecture. Parang how our cubism isnt cubism.
Second is how these western-filioinos design even stretches back from the spanish colonial period. The spaniards upon landing & invading the antillean region realized how european structures cant really survive monsoon afflicted areas...
& so they created a hybrid of house structures influenced by antillean architecture (wc was more resilient to typhoons) + european aesthetics. They brought that aesthetics in the Phils wc the pinoys filipinized on their own. Here’s a sample of an antillean house from vigan
Filipinized bc it retains, iirc, some internal structure/support that makes pinoy structure suited for pinoy climate. Most of our houses somehow follow the thickness of the ivatan house.
Lastly he asked what is pinoy house architecture ba in the time of typhoons? One remarkable & recurring feature is that the eaves of indigenous house designs in the phils are longer to prevent rain from coming in
Kankanay, ifugao, yakan
Kankanay, ifugao, yakan
Which is so different from modern subdivisions designs now, especially the ones with tall grand windows. Our modern roof & even window designs arent also made for storms.
Anyway ayun lang! Perhaps i could tap him into making this research public! Proud of my students

Anyway this will make you take a closer look into your homes. It definitely gave me a diff lens! & possibly sa mga future designers or architects, perhaps we can incorporate these designs to make better housing for everyone~
