Big news here. Take a lower royalty rate to have your song pushed to more people via the algorithm.

No details on how much lower that pay rate would be. But feel like this will benefit bigger artists with promo budgets more than the smaller ones. https://twitter.com/plastician/status/1323533736256876544
Would love to see if it were the case that taking a 20% cut in revenue could generate enough streams to cover the loss taken in the case that an unheard gem from your catalog is unearthed properly.
I do have a belief somewhere in me that Spotify has the power to change the lives of a lot of mid tier musicians if they really thought about it. I remain hopeful that the right people there will figure it out eventually. I think this is why they are always held to account bu us.
It’s definitely not as simple as demanding 1c per stream. We’d all love that, but they are a business doing billions of streams a day. That’s an unlikely pipe dream as long as the platform offers a free listening tier and probably still would be if everyone paid.
I’d be keen to try this out to see what it does for firstly a new release, and secondly a past release I feel was overlooked. Breathing life into existing works is something streaming could and should be doing more. The emphasis on constantly releasing is not good for art.
I don’t claim to have the answers to any of streaming’s problems. On one hand it’s amazing for people to discover you on. On the other hand it’s choked revenue / sales income. This won’t likely be a quick fix now folks are used to getting music for free everywhere.
Spotify isn’t even the main problem that needs fixing. People’s perception of access to free music being the norm is what would have to change over time first.
