The problem with reviewing a comic like this is that, in many regards, it's extremely boring to do so. Not that the comic is bad or boring, it's probably one of the best monthly titles currently ongoing. Rather, it's an album comic rather than a singles comic. https://twitter.com/thesteveorlando/status/1323273740587814915
To explain my terms, an Album Comic refers to a text where it works a lot better as a whole rather than as individual issues (think Blue in Green, Watchmen, or Strange Adventures).
Conversely, a Singles Comic is one where you can read the series in individual issues as well as part of a greater whole and get the same amount of enjoyment out of it (Phonogram, Doom Patrol, or Mister Miracle).
That isn't to say there won't be any good single issues in this series, but rather it's best understood as a whole. As such, when approaching a single issue, I am left saying "this is doing the Commanders in Crisis thing and doing it really well." It's doing everything right.
Indeed, the only thing about the comic worth talking about at this time is its central tension: this is a story about heroic former Presidents of the United States of America.
However a) it's election day, b) such an essay would not be best relayed on twitter, and c) such an essay needs the rest of the series in order to be honest. It could very well turn ugly if done wrong. But the tension at the heart of it is truly amazing to watch unfold.
Few comics have gotten me excited to read them each month as Commanders in Crisis, and I look forward to seeing where it goes.
