Compulsory unionism is gone and I don't think it's coming back. But the fight against it wasn't lead by workers, it was lead by corporations and business that have since used declining union strength to erode worker rights.
"But my freedom", yeah your rights as a worker have been steadily eroded because people freeloaded and wanted the benefits without paying the fees.
When I worked at McDonald's in the 90s as a student I got 1.5x pay on Sunday, 1.25x pay on Saturday and 4 hours was the minimum shift length. All of these conditions have been eroded.
Compulsion doesn't always mean less freedom.
I would argue the decline in Union strength has increased the power imbalance in employment, creating a more coercive environment.
In fact I did argue that in my Honours philosophy ethics dissertation.
Note: arguing in Philosophy doesn't mean you are right. But it means I have examined a fair bit of information around the issue and logically structured an argument.
I don't get to arbitrate truth. That was a whole different Philosophy paper.
