top 10 small forwards in the nba heading into the 2020-21 season

my criteria is a mix of production, health, and potential. i try to balance what they did this past year compared to what i think they'll do this coming year, so with that being said, let's get started
just a note before we get started, i will not be counting players like lebron james because, yes while he does usually play sf, he played point guard this year and until it's confirmed that he won't play it next year, he's a point guard in my book
honorable mentions: will barton, kelly oubre jr,

these guys came really damn close to making this list but just missed it, i do expect one of them to make it next year given the correct circumstances and barring injuries
10. andrew wiggins

we've been frustrated with wiggins' development his whole career up to this point but you can't deny he's a pretty good player regardless, he showed some insane promise earlier in the year and after the warriors trade and i have no doubt he'll improve in GSW
andrew wiggins 2019-20 statline:

21.8 PPG 5.1 RPG 3.7 APG 0.8 SPG 1.0 BPG 2.4 TPG 44.7 FG% 33.2 3PT% 70.9 FT%

his defensive effort and efficiency were lacking in minnesota but i'm sure he'll improve a lot in golden state with a good team around him and a winning environment
9. bojan bogdanovic

it pains me to put him on this list but i gotta give it to bojan, he surprised me, after a pretty awful shooting 2019 playoff series vs boston he came back with utah and shot great as he usually does in the regular season and was a big part of their success
bojan bogdanovic 2019-20 statline:

20.2 PPG 4.1 RPG 2.1 APG 0.5 SPG 0.1 BPG 2.5 TPG 44.7 FG% 41.4 3PT% 90.3 FT%

given the fact that he is 31, i'm not sure if he keeps this production up for much longer and he might regress next season, his defense is very questionable as well
8. gordon hayward

hayward is in an interesting situation. after a gruesome leg injury 3 years ago, he came back and reinvented his game and became a very productive player again, he's shown great strides in playmaking and shooting this past year and his career got a second wind.
gordon hayward 2019-20 statline:

17.5 PPG 6.7 RPG 4.1 APG 0.7 SPG 0.4 BPG 1.8 TPG 50 FG% 38.3 3PT% 85.5 FT%

hayward did turn 30 this year so he will most likely be going on the decline soon but i think he has a few more years of quality ball left in him, we'll have to see
7. tj warren

man oh man...what can i say about tj warren that i haven't said already, put indiana on the map in the nba bubble with his incredible scoring performances, and had a very solid playoff series vs miami as well, all on basically one leg! been underrated for too long.
tj warren 2019-20 statline:

19.8 PPG 4.2 RPG 1.5 APG 1.2 SPG 0.5 BPG 1.3 TPG 53.6 FG% 40.3 3PT% 81.9 FT%

expect warren to improve next year in the new nate bjorkgren pacers offense, he will most likely take more shots and improve more on his defense, big things ahead for warren
6. demar derozan

while demar has gradually fallen out of the public eye after his toronto days, he's put together a solid couple seasons in san antonio, people don't talk about him but he's been very good for the spurs and is still a very productive player in the nba at 31 y/o.
demar derozan 2019-20 statline:

22.1 PPG 5.5 RPG 5.6 APG 1.0 SPG 0.3 BPG 2.4 TPG 53.1 FG% 25.7 3PT% 84.5 FT%

while his defensive production has drastically gone down and he hasn't yet developed a reliable 3pt shot, he's still a very good player and can still produce highly
5. brandon ingram

what a great story, after being injured numerous times and forgotten about on the lakers, brandon ingram was traded as a throw in in the anthony davis trade and turned out to be a star in the making. he's shown tremendous ability last year and is getting better
brandon ingram 2019-20 statline:

23.8 PPG 6.1 RPG 4.2 APG 1.0 SPG 0.6 BPG 3.0 TPG 46.3 FG% 39.1 3PT% 85.1 FT%

ingram definitely deserved his most improved player award as his improvement from the previous year was monumental, one can only hope he improves given him being 23 y/o
4. khris middleton

middleton had another great season this year next to giannis on the bucks, he's really settled into that #2 option and has turned into a real star in milwuakee, his all around play is excellent and his shooting is especially great
khris middleton 2019-20 statline:

20.9 PPG 6.2 RPG 4.3 APG 0.9 SPG 0.1 BPG 2.2 TPG 49.6 FG% 41.5 3PT% 91.6 FT%

middleton just barely missed out on a 50/40/90 season this year but he was still extremely efficient, he can do it all scoring wise and isn't bad all around either
3. jimmy butler

butler proved a LOT of people wrong this year. after being doubted and pushed as an afterthought after his stints in minnesota and philadelphia, he turned that label around and turned a great regular season with miami, into an incredible finals run
jimmy butler 2019-20 statline:

19.9 PPG 6.7 RPG 6.0 APG 1.8 SPG 0.6 BPG 2.2 TPG 45.5 FG% 24.4 3PT% 83.4 FT%

while butler's per game stats look very solid, they don't fully translate his value to his team, his production also increased incredibly in the playoffs, he was a killer
2. kevin durant

now i'm reluctant to put him on this list, not because i'm doubting his production, but because i have a feeling he's gonna play power forward next year, i have him at 2 right now but he might move to a different list once the season starts, we'll have to see
kevin durant 2018-19 statline:

26.0 PPG 6.4 RPG 5.9 APG 0.7 SPG 1.1 BPG 2.9 TPG 52.1 FG% 35.3 3PT% 88.5 FT%

i COULD have him at number 1 but of course since he didn't play last year and the fact that he's coming off a devastating injury hurts his ranking, he'll still be great.
1. kawhi leonard

this was pretty obvious, even though kawhi had a pretty bad ending to his 2020 playoff run that ended in a blown 3-1 lead to the denver nuggets and a massive choke for his standards, he's still slightly the best sf in the league and will still be great next year
kawhi leonard 2019-20 statline:

27.1 PPG 7.1 RPG 4.9 APG 1.8 SPG 0.6 BPG 2.6 TPG 47.0 FG% 37.8 3PT% 88.6 FT%

the big thing to note here is kawhi's leap in playmaking ability, that was a big concern for a while but he drastically improved this year, still one of the best
