NEW/THREAD: LA County Sheriff @LACoSheriff tells me he will have a "zero tolerance" policy on any looting/violence this week. All patrols now on 12 hour shifts. 3 mobile field forces, SRT teams ready to deploy anywhere. Will be watching DTLA, WeHo, Beverly Hills, SM. @FOXLA
Sheriff says law enforcement has learned from the George Floyd unrest, & LASD will be ready to respond to problems immediately without having to deal with mayors & city councils like municipal police have to. Says LASD will be prepared to support all local police as well. @FOXLA
I asked Villanueva what he thinks about seeing so much of the city boarding up.
He said: "I think the group of people that is willing to do something stupid like vandalize or loot is not that big of a group, and we're gonna be ready for them and take action immediately." @FOXLA
Villanueva says if a worst case scenario arises and resources are running thin, he alone will make decision on National Guard. Last time, Sheriff says he requested them. Mayor Garcetti then said we didn't need them because "This isn't 1992". Hours later, they were called. @FOXLA
Villanueva says you can expect to see a heavy LASD presence around the city/county, but they will not be at or near polling stations unless they are called for any issues. Says LASD doesn't want to concern people who may be nervous about law enforcement being near polls. @FOXLA
Villaneuva says when the polling stations close at 8pm, around 300 LASD deputies will be responsible for transporting the ballots for all precincts back to Norwalk to the Registrar-Recorder's office. @FOXLA
Sheriff Villanueva's final message for those feeling anxious tonight:
"Things are gonna be alright. We need to respect everyone's right to vote, and respect the results. It's not the end of the world if your candidate/party doesn't win. Democracy works." Full story 10pm @FOXLA
Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes tells us 800+ deputies are trained for mobile field force & ready to respond.
"Peaceful free speech will always be supported, but acts that restrict anyone’s right to vote, or cause violence and destruction will be addressed swiftly." @FOXLA
San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon tells me his department has been preparing for the election for over a year. Increased staffing, 12 hour shifts, no intelligence to suggest any anarchy, violence, or chaos, but ready to respond to any problems should they arise. @FOXLA
Sheriff McMahon says his department has trained poll workers in de-escalation tactics, and deputies have all polling locations and drop boxes accessible in their computer database in case of any election related calls for service. Full story w/ all departments 10pm on @FOXLA
