The #Vienna shooting is the first serious #terrorism attack for Austria in years.

In 2019 three Chechens planned an attack on Vienna's Christmas markets; in 2014 a Turkish minor plotted a bomb at the capital's train station. Both ISIS-inspired, both thwarted.
Austria was considered relatively safe, although in 2019 the Parliament recommended to strengthen the Counter terrorism agency BVT, which was understaffed.

Out of 313 FTFs - many of Turkish & Balkan origin - 94 are returnees, 55 dead. Main recruiter was Bosnian Mirsad Omerovic.
Kurz's attitude was to some extent similar to #Macron's policy: in 2018 he said political Islam's parallel society and radicalizing tendencies had no place in #Austria, as he announced to shut down 6 foreign-backed (by Turkey) mosques, including one run by the Grey Wolves.
In 2017 counter #terrorism agency BVT said that a growing number of asylum-seekers joined Salafist networks in Austria, so in 2019 Kurz planned to hold asylum-seekers in preventive detention if deemed a security threat, of course detentions would be subject to judicial review.
