Like I said, I did my last texting shift for @BidenForFL tonight (tomorrow I'll be election site watching) but I wanted to tell a little story about this whole experience...
This year (basically post spring break) has been one of the toughest for me. My academic career kind of came to a screeching halt, there was some personal issues/heartache, and obviously I've been unable to travel back home to see my parents and won't be able to for a while.
That just scratches the surface (and that's just the very personal stuff/I'm not even talking about all of the awful things that have transpired in the wider world, with the pandemic being at the top of that list) but it kind of sums it all up.
So it was a time when I was feeling very lost and adrift. And thus I kind of threw myself into politics and volunteering with @FlaDems and @BidenForFL .
After the unpleasantness of 2016, I sort of checked out from politics (save for, obviously, voting and I did donate to Elizabeth Warren's primary campaign). But I'd been so burned by that 2016 election night experience that I just disconnected.
And it had been even longer since I'd done volunteering for a campaign (2009-2010 back in Winston-Salem, I did some canvassing for our city council candidates and realized how much I hated doing phone calls. But now with texting as a form of outreach/contact, I felt more at home)
But the volunteering I did it... got me going again. It gave me a sense of purpose. And it rekindled my passion for politics and government and service and all that stuff (and thus I'm hoping, as I start to shift into a new career path, to pursue that in some way going forward).
Obviously, I don't know what's going to happen with the election. I'm hopeful, but I'm generally a hopeful person (that's where the Catholicism comes in). But again, who knows?
But I just wanted to take a moment and say these words of thanks for the work that helped me through a tough time and hopefully did some good in the world.
