The “Donald Trump can’t be a fascist because he’s incompetent” is wrong about both fascism and the Trump regime and Trumpism.
Fascist leaders are and were often not competent administrators. They used the force of the state to route resources to cronies and supporters while savaging others. They did not build public goods like functioning train or other public transit systems.
See the way that the Trump admin has denied resources to “Democrat cities” and “Democrat states” while pouring in money to Iowa farmers ... that’s fascism.
The trains did not run on time. The government said the trains ran on time. The media reported the trains were on time. The people, waiting for their train, agreed everything was on time. That’s fascism.
But also: the Trump regime has been highly efficient at privatizing public goods and channeling resources to chosen corrupt elites. They have been highly efficient at harming non-white peoples (American and immigrant, in different ways).
Trump regime has also been highly efficient at creating a variety of unaccountable armed domestic forces, from police unions to militia terrorists to the DHS good with their minivans.
The Trump regime has been highly efficient at creating and intensifying domestic propaganda tools and cowing opposition from other conservatives who opposed their rise.
This is all a normal fascist movement. It’s a normal fascist attempt at the takeover of a democratic system of government. The details change from context to context, but the patten is so simply clear.
In short: ask a(n) historian. Not an MD.
