been thinking a lot lately about a poem my cousin wrote about having 'no box to tick' when you're Cypriot. lately I've just been ticking 'White - Other' then adding 'Levantine', but this still sort of feels like a misnomer
I think this is while I was so riled a few weeks ago by the Gal Gadot-as-Cleopatra discourse. Arguments swung two ways: Gadot shouldn't have been cast over a North African actress, or, it doesn't matter that Gadot was cast because Cleopatra was actually Greek, ergo 'white'
Many Levantine people are unsure about whether to identify as a POC, or non-white (I would personally not ever call myself a POC). But how much weight can we apply to these grey-area nuances of heritage and skin-colour, especially with such righteous fury and online pile-on?
