I always tell Christians they must not be partisan but principled in their voting. And until this election year, I have never endorsed a candidate for President; even while advising, when asked, candidates and presidents of both parties. This time is different.
Candidates and parties are always imperfect, but sometimes, the moral choices are so clear and the consequences so grave—like in this presidential election between @realDonaldTrump and @JoeBiden . This year the integrity of faith itself is at stake in an election.
Therefore, I have endorsed @JoeBiden over @realDonaldTrump , as more faith leaders I know have ever done before from across the church’s many families. How can Christians vote for the re-election of Donald Trump? Here are my beatitudes for election 2020.
Blessed are the poor and poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven-- Contrast a President whose prideful wealth and wealthy spirit puts greed and money above all else, with no relationship to the poor.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted-- Contrast a President who displays a complete lack of empathy and takes no responsibility whatsoever for the millions who have suffered and hundreds of thousands who have died in this life-altering pandemic.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Contrast a President with such an utter lack of any human humility or even self-reflection that are so necessary for wise leadership.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. Contrast a President who never seeks to do what is “right,” the meaning of the word “righteousness” in Hebrew, or seeking “justice,” the biblical synonym for “righteousness”.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. Contrast to a President whose favorite communication is through his Tweets which show no mercy toward anyone but are relentless and constant attacks in a vicious and venomous spirit, the exact opposite to mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God-- Contrast a President who has a lifetime of personal and public behavior that not even his closest allies would ever describe as “pure in heart,” and with a heart that almost no one can even see.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God-- Contrast a President who has spent four years dividing people, especially by race and culture, and causing them to fear, hate, and even act in violence against those who are different from them.
You are the salt of the earth…You are the light of the world-- Contrast a President who does not preserve what is important as salt does but seeks disruption and destruction. A President who refuses to cast light on what is wrong and in need of change.
Every presidential candidates I have ever known, Democrat or Republican, would acknowledge truth and the challenge of the beatitudes. @RealDonaldTrump lives and speaks in direct opposition, in denial even, to all the beatitudes of Christ. So how can Christians vote for him?
