The President’s commission is akin to gift shop historical analysis. His panel of enthusiastic white-washers want American students to beat their chest & wave the flag without ever taking the time to truly examine our county’s history. They’re completely missing the point. https://twitter.com/realdonaldtrump/status/1323344710023471116
Real historical analysis involves learning more than quick facts or embracing every narrative like heroic legend carved in granite. It is difficult because it involves actions, ideas & values from imperfect humans with a variety of goals, dreams & plans for America.
Our American history is filled with incredible lessons that can provide quality examples of where we’ve been; both positive & negative at times. The goal still remains that we can never be satisfied but can always be focused on making a better America for those that follow.
Our government leaders should encourage our teachers to promote a thoughtful examination of our past with a focus on our charter documents & experiences. We must hold up our values & goals, and reconcile them with our actions. Has America kept her promise to ALL of her citizens?
No history or government teacher wants students to feel bad or ashamed of our collective past; we provide evidence & context in order to have conversations that can push future generations of civic leaders to strive to want to do better for their communities.
If those conversations are “radical indoctrination” then the President obviously doesn’t want students to think critically about American values, history, culture or government. I, for one, want our students to think, feel, and stand for what they believe in. That’s my America.
I proudly voted for @JoeBiden for President of the United States because I know he will nominate a supporter & defender of public education; someone that embraces real teaching & learning for our students. From all educators, good luck tomorrow & beyond!
