here's why 'not caring' about someone's gender or sexuality isn't fighting for lgbt rights and equality, a thread:
equality means making two people equal. simple, right? it's not about how they got there, all that matters is they're equal in the end. say you have someone with $2, and someone with $10. how would you make them equal? you would give the person with $2, $8 more,
...and give the other person none. we don't give the $10 person 'equal treatment' because they're already there. straight people have all the rights and acceptance the lgbtq+ are fighting for. so we need to do extra campaigning and activism for them because they need it, and
...cishets don't. ignoring a history (and present) where people have been oppressed for their sexuality is privilege and ignorance. in order to set things right, you have to admit there's an inequality in the first place.
we don't want to oppress cishet people too, there's a difference between a picrew pfp calling you a hettie on twitter and receiving the death sentence in one of 72 countries for your gender or sexuality. it's not shaming you, we simply ask that you put effort into
...understanding our experiences and fighting alongside us for our rights. the first step is acknowledging history and the existence of mass systemic oppression. that's what true equality means.
when you ignore all of this, you are a part of the problem. when you say 'i dont give a fuck if you're gay' you admit you're privileged enough to ignore the centuries of oppression and the persisting inequality.
