One thing I got unhelpfully accustomed to in learning “serious academic theology” was prioritizing theological topics and conversations based on what the field says is important rather than what most people find important. This is indeed important for the academic discipline. 1/3
BUT prioritizing what the guild says is important isn't always so great for the actual practice of ministry and formation. I think one of the reasons mainline gets left behind by more conservative denoms is our clergy are trained with academic loci exclusively. 2/3
I challenge everyone who is interested in actually making people more knowledgeable about Christianity to look at the top things people were googling about it in 2019 and act accordingly (is this part of @earthandaltar Xtianity 101 research? maybe...) https://theolocast.org/blog/top-101-theological-questions/ 3/3
BTW I think the loci as taught in academic theology are also important. I’m not advocating academic theology simply follow popular opinion and lose internal norms. But we need to then learn to think along two tracks of importance. PS/3
