What I wish people knew about psychosis:

- not everyone with psychosis is dangerous
- you’re more likely to be assaulted by a drunk than a schizophrenic
- regressing can happen (I felt like I went back to being 12)
- psychosis isn’t just hearing voices & seeing things
- medication isn’t the only answer
- 1 in 100 people experiences it in their lifetime
- voices aren’t always commanding in nature
- voices make it very hard to concentrate so be patient please
- a lot of the stigma lies actually within the MH system
- it is terrifying
- relapses almost always have an external trigger (behaviour isn’t at random)
- it is the loneliest thing you could ever experience
- delusions usually hold some great relevance to other life events for the person
- it can happen to anyone
- feeling no sense of reality is 😰
- music through headphones often helps (people aren’t being rude by keeping them in)
- personal hygiene is often very difficult
- there are therapies available that help (I did CBT for psychosis for over a year)
- technology can be scary and overwhelming
- it is usually a trauma response
- it is not an excuse to ignore a patients wishes, assuming they cannot hold an opinion because they have a psychotic illness
- nobody ever never needed to be scared of me, they just needed to be kind
Ever never 🤣 sorry my brain is made of soup today
