Today should not be a day of celebration. And yet it is.
Today, all across Australia, people will celebrate the archaic, unnecessary, and fundamentally cruel sport of horse racing.

Whether or not a horse dies on the track at this year's Melbourne Cup, we know every horse in the race will suffer during the event, and long after.
We know:
A horse dies on Australian race tracks every three days

Ex-racehorses routinely appear at slaughterhouses and knackeries - the ABC’s 7.30 program revealed that around 300 horses used for racing went through a single facility in just 22 days. The horses had won a total of almost $5 million in prize money.
Every year in Aus, approx one-third of racehorses are retired from racing. While there's no record of what happens to most of them, we do know that Aus has around 30 knackeries that slaughter horses for pet meat, & two abattoirs that slaughter horses for human consumption
Around 30% of foals bred to race will never run a race - "wastage" is the term used to describe horses killed when they're deemed useless to the industry.
Race horses often bleed from the lungs as a result of exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhaging - the blood is often seen pouring from their nostrils
Race horses are drugged to optimise their racing performance - and it's often a cocktail of many drugs

Race horses have their tongue tied to their lower jaw to enhance performance.
Race horses are whipped repeatedly - in any other circumstance, this would be deemed animal cruelty and prosecutable under the law.

Just because it's legal, doesn't mean it's right.
That's why this month, I am introducing a bill to NSW Parliament to:
* criminalise sending ex-racehorses to knackeries
* putting in place a birth-to-death racehorse registration & rehoming scheme
* ban whips, spurs & tongue ties

While the vile "sport" of horse racing continues to exist, we need to end the despicable practices that are routine to the industry.
I will fight hard to get my bill through Parliament.
