Progressives who oppose universal basic income because the rich get it too should start proposing that Medicare for All exclude those same people, that those same people aren't allowed to send their kids to public schools, and that they'll need to pay for their own firefighters.
Just in case it's not obvious, that would be strategically dumb to propose, and would immediately weaken each program by dividing the population into those who benefit who lack the political power to defend them, and those who don't benefit who have all the power to oppose them.
Besides the fact it's based on a poor understanding of how UBI works, because the rich pay more for UBI than they receive from it, just as they pay more for public schools and possibly don't even use them, the fact is that universality is key to building and maintaining support.
