Two months ago, work started on building a new cycle way heading east from Greenwich Town Centre. Whilst there are mixed views for and against the scheme, there are also questions about the pace, quality and safety of the building work which is still ongoing. A thread...
To reach the start of the route, cyclists can enjoy a pleasant cycle from Greenwich Town Centre via the Old Royal Naval College. But in the evenings when the site is closed, you have to take your chances on Romney Road. The eastbound side is particularly narrow.
The section from Park Row to Trafalgar Rd via Old Woolwich Rd is largely unchanged except for extra cycle signs painted on the road & more sturdy bollards on the modal filter. It works, motor traffic is light & you get to enjoy the back streets of East Greenwich
You join Trafalgar Rd at Christchurch Way where 2-way segregated cycle lane begins. Arrangements across the junction are a bit messy so take care. Wands provide protection until you approach Tyler St bus stop which is being removed. Until then buses pull into the cycle lane.

You then approach the busy Blackwall Lane junction. Thereās a traffic light controlled filter lane for bikes but not yet operational. At least someoneās been down there and reinstated the temp barriers (pic left: last week, pic right: today)
Work on the opposite side of the Blackwall Lane junction seem to have ground to a halt. Plans involve removing the barriers outside the pub and widening the pavement for pedestrians. No progress here recently, apart from reinstating the temporary barriers.
You then hit the next problem on Woolwich Road. This bus stop is supposed to be closed / relocated but until that happens buses stop and park blocking the bike lane.

Looking east, a new bus stop has been built with cycle lane passing behind it. But apart from the physical construction, no bus stop markings and not yet in use.
The next stretch of cycle lane along Woolwich Road works well and is almost complete. I think these are supposed to be pedestrian islands to assist with crossing the road, but have been left like this for weeks. It looks a mess.
Further east again and you hit another bus stop which hasnāt been moved, so buses have to pull into the cycle lane to drop off and pick up passengers.

As you approach the dangerous Angerstein roundabout, the road layout is looking quite different. Building work completed but no cycle lane markings added yet.
Quite what this is, Iām not sure! I assume a new bus stop will be added here where the tactile paving is. You can still see the old bus stop in the distance which hasnāt yet been moved. The new cycle crossing across the roundabout not yet open.
So thatās it so far. Thereās been little progress during October, much still to be done and no updates from @TfL or @Royal_Greenwich about whatās happening. Iād like to see it completed soon.
