/12 Today I was reading the "Gradius Portable Official Guidebook: Legend of I°II°III°IV°Gaiden" ( https://archive.org/details/i-ii-iii-iv) and saw the picture... LET'S TALK SHMUP HITBOXES
/12 DoDonPachi Hitboxes (taken from http://shmups.wiki , originally from a GAMEST magazine or a guidebook I can't find right now). As you can see, your hitbox is thinner while moving sideways (DOJ SafeSpots make use of this)
/12 Let's keep talking about CAVE games' HITBOXES, next one up is an infamous one, ever wonder why you sometimes get hit inconsistently in ESP Ra De? The HITBOX is in their NECKS, NOT CENTERED!
/12 Keeping up with CAVE games... Let's talk GUWANGE Hitboxes! ever wonder why sometimes some characters feel a bit more inconsistent than others? Now you know...
/12 One of the most interesting things in the Mushihimesama series is how depending on the mode you pick, your hitbox size will be different! (Original) on top/(Maniac and Ultra) on the bottom.
/12 Oh but I haven't finished with CAVE yet! Let's look at the hitboxes shown in the Nintendo DS version (Death Label) and the ones in the Arcade (the one in the modern port, taken from the INH DVD booklet)
/12 As a last little extra for other CAVE games, I'll add Dangun Feveron Hitboxes, it might help people, especially considering how fast the game is:
/12 Spoke too fast, here we can see Progear Hitboxes (Bolt and Ring respectively):
/12 Ok, ok, too much CAVE now... Let's try giving a look to Battle Garegga Hitboxes, this one might be interesting for all of you Yagawa fans:
/12 Since we're on Raizing shmups now, let's look at an APPROXIMATION of Dimahoo hitboxes now:
/12 Now let's cover another company you might have heard of... Psikyo! Let's look at the hitboxes in Dragon's Blaze. It is fascinating how the head is the hitbox while riding the dragon, but the chest is the hitbox when flying solo. Unlike ESPRADE, hitboxes are CENTERED.
/12 Info was gathered from multiple sources including http://archive.org  archived magazines and guidebooks, waybackmachine snapshots of a thread in the french http://shmup.forum.com , different ST threads on http://shmup.system11.org  and a lot of curiosity & google-fu.
