The reason the GOP can’t win Black voters is because the one time a pol tried to figure out if they could (Jack Kemp) they yeeted him out of the party. They want Black votes without promising anything in return
The reason Dems consistently get 70-90% of the Black vote the past half-century is the party keeping civil rights and anti-discrimination as a priority (ie HUD policy, CRA). GOP doesn’t want to do that, so Black voters have 0 reason to vote for them pragmatically
The GOP thinks that since Black voters are, on paper, comparatively religious and socially conservative to other groups that they would be easy to reach out to from purely socially conservative politics. Not that simple, my guys
Also, the need to center appeals to white evangelicals and nativists and “libertarians” (a la Goldwater) requires making plays that Black voters usually don’t like (“states rights” rhetoric) so it’s Catch 22
This is almost a polar opposite to the problem with lefty politicians appealing to “wwc” voters on economic issues and forgetting (or ignoring) that a lot of white voters are driven by cultural issues and the economic values are just opinions
The GOP during reconstruction had a solid Black voter base because they had generally positive politics vis-a-vis freedmen and voting rights. They delivered on concrete things that benefitted Black voters that...
...the then Dixie-dominated Democratic party were outwardly hostile to.
