Dear faculty: Before you send your students off to "find a primary source" on a topic, consider carefully: Do you know if the types of primary sources you want them to find exist? Are they digitized? Could you find them if you had to do this yourself?
Also, are your students clear on what constitutes a primary source? Have you talked about this with them in class?
If your answer to any of those questions is "no" or "I'm not sure," this is an EXCELLENT time to talk to your librarian about how to structure the assignment in a way that will let your students succeed.
There are lots of ways to work primary sources into an assignment, and lots of primary sources that your library may offer access to, but if you assume your students know how to find them (or will ask for help), then...some of your students are going to flounder.
