Today is #WorldFertilityDay - I always though if I was lucky enough to get pregnant I’d be braver about sharing our story but I still find it difficult to talk about, I’m still ashamed that my body put us through so much - but we must start talking about fertility more #thread
In a nutshell our story goes - stopped trying to not have a baby because you know I’ll get pregnant super quick - a few months slip by and I realise somethings up - I’m having very long cycles - I go to my GP expecting to be told everything is fine #worldfertilityday
We do a whole host of blood tests that broadly show everything is fine so I get sent for an ultrasound and this was the shocker - on ultrasound I had classic polycystic ovaries - I remember being stunned because I honestly thought #polycysticovaries was something that affected
Women who had symptoms like being overweight or having acne neither of which I had plus hormonally initial blood tests showed up nothing. So we had some private blood tests which showed i had a very high amount of eggs & that I’m insulin resistant- both classic markers of PCOS
I get put on Metformin- a drug I need to take for life now to control the insulin resistance & we set about many many rounds of ovulation induction- taking all sorts of fertility drugs in the hope my ovaries would respond - spoiler - the stubborn buggers did nothing, nada, zilch
This was one of the worst and hardest times in my life - every month I’d take a bunch of pills only to get to scan day and be told my ovaries weren’t responding. At this point I started feeling very low and started counselling- one of the best things we did during this time
We are then offered ovarian drilling - a surgical procedure which burns tiny holes into ovaries and for reasons the Drs don’t fully understand in some women particularly with lean PCOS as mine is described it gets cycles up and running again #worldfertilityday
