I have said for a while that climate change is a world-historical challenge and must be our priority. But nothing will happen without democracy. But no matter what happens tomorrow or this week or next, the priority needs to be to renew American democracy.
That means a revamped Voting Rights Act. It means allowing prisoners and former-prisoners to vote. It means a renewed commitment to first amendment activities and an end of overpolicing protests. It means reformed labor law ease union organizing and bring democracy back to work.
It means a national popular vote and the end of the filibuster. It means restoring public education's focus on creating citizens, not training workers. It means states and localities allowing permanent residents to vote in state and local elections.
It should mean lowering the voting age, something states can do on their own even before there's a constitutional amendment.
Yes, as with the New Deal, it will mean reigning in the judiciary. https://twitter.com/irenecolth/status/1323330313519443968?s=20
If we're getting ambitious, what I want is a constitutional amendment that unambiguously establishes a right to vote, moves election day to a weekend, and ends the electoral college.
