Gramsci’s main contribution to thought is a repurposing of much of Machiavelli & Pareto to create the idea of “cultural hegemony,” which is basically the idea that capitalists keep society in a state that prevents revolution thru control of certain key culture production centers
Gramsci was the General secretary of the Italian communist party at one point - clearly if he thinks these cultural institutions are being used to prevent revolution, he would find that to be a bad thing
So here’s Gramsci, a Marxist realizing that the Marxist must turn his focus toward the cultural institutions being used to control the populace.
