Briefly: @StacyDJupiter, Simon Cripps, @emilysdarling, and I wrote about the remarkable scientific and political consensus in the @ICRI_Coral_Reef recommendation on the @UNBiodiversity #Post2020 framework, and what governments must do next. Less briefly: Global, consensus-based negotiations are difficult, and the @UNBiodiversity negotiations on the post-2020 global biodiversity framework (GBF) are no different. We can make them easier by identifying areas of consensus well in advance of the final negotiation. 2/7
Over ~2 years, online and in the margins of various meetings, government and civil society members of ICRI - including @theWCS - worked hard to agree on the essential elements needed #ForCoral in the GBF, published in full earlier this year (see: http://coralpost2020.org ). 3/7
ICRI's recommendation touches not only on the language of post-2020 goals and targets, but also on the critical indicators we need to measure our progress (below), and language needed in other CoP Decisions to ensure resources and capacity are available for implementation. 4/7
Stacy, Simon, Emily and I put together this short piece, but all of @theWCS inputs to the recommendation are based on the cutting-edge scientific research and practical experience of our global, science-based coral reef conservation program. 5/7

But there's still much to be done @UNBiodiversity negotiations. Adopting ICRI's consensus recommendations as part of the #Post2020 GBF at CBD CoP15 will requires concerted action from National Focal Points ( https://bit.ly/3egHn6O ) and coral champions during SBSTTA, SBI, etc. 6/7
