So I read the NYT story about the Nebraska farmer whose tractor got burned up & who says rural folks feel seen by Trump, etc. That's nice, but what struck me was how they explicitly DO NOT CARE WHAT HAPPENS TO THE REST OF THE COUNTRY.
I'm reading this story to find some sympathy. But when these nice farm people describe Trump as a "victim," and the virus as other people's problem, not theirs, my sympathy is ... VERY CHALLENGED.
Listen, I'm sure they're nice salt of the earth people, but their willingness--eagerness--to let the rest of us flap in the wind of despair & death so they can feel part of a club seems ... belligerent.
Finally, let me just add: I live in a rural area of upstate New York and I often hear this "but my 401k is doing great" argument for Trump. (Lady on @60minutes said same last night). Then I ask, when do you plan on retiring? Oh, 15 YEARS FROM NOW? That's 3 presidencies away.
My point is that a lot of Trump supporters fundamentally don't care about the actual people inside the country. They just don't. They see America as a free-for-all bound together only by a belligerent form of patriotism *about* the country.
